One of the few people still keeping the art of lacemaking alive in Ireland is Clare Salley of Ashford Co. Wicklow, who first learned her craft as a teenager. She even made her own wedding veil.
Then eight years ago Clare set up a small business making Carrickmacross lace collars, Bridal and First Communion veils, christening dresses and small items like handkerchiefs.

Carrickmacross Lace
Irish Carrickmacross lace is undoubtedly the finest and most delicate lacework in the world. In 1820 a certain Mrs Grey Porter on her honeymoon in Italy saw the local lacemakers at work and was immediately enthralled at what she saw. She brought back the technique to Ireland and with the materials available to her, set about improving it. This lace became known as Carrickmacross lace - taking it's name from the area in which she lived. The design is appliqued to a fine net using organdie fine crochet cotton and thread. A distinctive loop edging, pops and filling stitches complete each piece. Carrickmacross Lace is hand sewn and has a subtle quality, which defies imitation. Carrickmacross Lace is traditionally applique work on net using very fine stitches. The patterns were adopted in the same way as Aran stitches are in knitting, according to the maker's own style and arrangement. Clare likes to work in the morning light, with mostly white or off white cotton or silk yarn, though she has occassionally made black collars for evening wear.
